Polk Audio Introduces New Dual 12-inch Subwoofer Enclosure
Features patented Power Port venting technology

Today speaker manufacturer Polk Audio announced the new db212-2—two db124 12-inch subwoofers in a perfectly optimized, solid-as-a-rock ported enclosure, designed to pound out awesome, apocalyptic bass.

The 34" x 16" X 17" enclosure is fabricated from internally braced ¾" MDF – the same low resonance material used in the world's finest speaker enclosures. The front baffle is clad in automotive grade ABS trim for rigidity and resistance to impact. All other surfaces of the enclosure are covered in Black automotive carpet material. Sandwiched between the front trim and underlying MDF baffle is a sheet of Elastomeric damping material that isolates the ABS trim from the baffle and acts as a sealing gasket for the woofer drivers. This "tri-laminate" sandwich construction prevents unwanted rattles and resonance to ensure bass that is as tight and musical as it is powerful.

Wheel-style heavy-duty ABS grilles are supplied to protect the drivers from damage due to shifting cargo. Grilles and front baffle may be painted to match the vehicle's interior color.

But the real story of the db212-2 is its highly efficient bass output, the result of the robust drivers and the application of Polk Audio's patented Power Port venting technology combined with a slot-loaded port. The Power Port system reduces air turbulence at the port mouth for higher bass output with vastly lower noise and distortion than that of conventional ports.

The dual 12-inch subwoofers are Single Voice Coil 4 Ohm drivers wired in parallel for a net 2-Ohm load – optimum for today's Class D subwoofer amplifiers. These robust drivers feature stiff Polypropylene cones for outstanding temperature and tensile strength. Their Santoprene surrounds are impervious to extremes in temperature, humidity and exposure to sunlight for excellent long term reliability. Fire-retardant flat NOMEX® Spiders allow extended linear motion while providing highly reliable mechanical and thermal stability. The former and pole piece vent the 4-layer High Temperature Voice Coil Former for exceptional power handling and reliability.

As with all Polk Audio subwoofers, the voice coil alignment, motor and suspension were optimized using a state-of-the-art Klippel laser analyzer. The result is superior cone travel linearity for flatter response and lower distortion.

The new Polk db212-2 subwoofer will be available in authorized Polk Audio US and Canadian retailers in June 2005 with a MSRP of $429 ($529 CDN).
