I need help deciding what's wrong with my stereo system...

Hey everybody. I have a problem with my system in my car, but I have two problems. First, I didn't install it. I actually bought my car at an auction, as it had been taken from some guy with a DUI, and it came with this huge stereo system. Secondly, I have no idea what any part of my system is called (I honestly don't know what an AMP is, etc.), so I need basic help.

My whole trunk is taken by this huge box with two speakers. I basically don't have a trunk because of this thing, which is fine. The problem is that my bass stopped working over two years ago. One day it literally just stopped. I'll admit that I tested its limits, but I'd never had that good of a stereo system and both then and now have no idea how it works.

The weird part is, though, every once in a while (every five or six months on average) my bass will start working again. Sometimes it'll start working when I turn my car on or even just as I'm driving in the middle of a song. It will stay on for a few minutes, and then it will quit again, and it won't work for another few months.

The other night it started working, then it stopped, but the next morning it was working again. As far as I know, it will work the next time I turn on my car. I had my uncle, who works with electronics in homes and cars, look at it. He couldn't really get into the "speaker box" without tearing my car apart but told me it's probably a loose wire.

Has anyone had this happen? Should I get it fixed or should I just buy a new system? The only thing I know about my bass system is that the speakers in my trunk say "American Bass." All I want out of my system is good sound and for my car to vibrate with the bass. That's what I loved about this system before it stopped working.

Sorry for such a long post, but I hope I made what is happening clear without different vocabulary! Thanks to anyone who can help.

Loose wires happen all the time.  It could easily be a loose wire either in the box or on the amplifiers.  My best recommendation would be to take it to a local shop there and have them take a quick look at it.  Ask a few friends for the name of a shop they trust and have that shop take a look around, or if you're not comfortable with taking it alone have someone go with you to help keep the old "its trashed and you need this one right here $$$$$" line from coming up so easy.  Either way it sounds like its something simple like that, and you never know you might just see something you'd really rather have.

also it could be a bad amp or an amp not getting enough power that would also be something to check 4!!
