sub hums and pops and doesn't pound as loud as it should

i have an olympus 2412 subwoofer powered by a 4000 watt lanzer vib286. when the car is running you can hear the high pitched whine of the alternator and when the volume is turned up the sub begins to pop. what could i do to correct this? i used to have a alpine sub with a differnt lanzer amp until i accidentaly spilled pop on it and i replaced every thing but the wires so far so i was wondering if it could be the wires?
